Climate Smart Agriculture Investments Planning from the CIAT

Experts on climate finance and policy from the International Center of Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) /CGIAR were invited to the Maison de la Microfinance in Luxembourg to present their work on Climate Smart Agriculture Investments Plan to InFiNe.lu members.

The CIAT is part of the CGIAR, a global network of 15 Research Centers conducting innovative research, for a food secure future dedicated to reducing poverty, enhancing food and nutrition security, and improving natural resources. CGIAR Research Centers are independent, non-profit international organisations. CIAT has 21 offices and projects in more than 60 countries around the world.

CIAT /CGIAR work is to support the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals, more specifically :

  • SDG 1 : No poverty
  • SDG 2 : Zero hunger
  • SDG 3 : Good health and well-being
  • SDG 5 : Gender equality
  • SDG 8 : Decent work and economic growth
  • SDG 13 : Climate action
  • SDG 15 : Life on land

CIAT works on Sustainable Finance Programme targeting investors, financial institutions, corporates, governments and donors. The objective is to deliver demand-based research to partner and clients to accelerate sustainable investments in low-carbon and climate resilient food systems ; advance sustainable finance agenda, with specific focus on climate finance. CIAT provides advisory services to public and private investors, donors for :

  • impact measurement framework and support them to integrate sustainability in the investment strategies ;
  • climate risk screening and agriculture risk-management solutions.

CIAT supports international financial institutions and climate funds on climate finance and investment planning. It works on strengthening the capacity of governments to finance the implementation of their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).

CIAT has developed a methodology to advice international organisations, civil society, governments based on their demand on climate smart agriculture investments plan. Experts from CIAT analyse the climate risk profile of countries/regions (targeting situations, climate risks, enabling conditions) and based on this analysis they develop different possible scenarios to implement climate smart investment in the land-use sector.
